What: Shazam has developed a real-time song identification service. When users hear a song they like, they simply dial Shazam's four-digit number from their mobile, let their phones listen along to the music for 15 seconds, and then receive an SMS message from Shazam with the name of the track and the artist.
Following identification of the desired track, the tune is "tagged" and users can then select from an array of options to interact with the song, including access to a personal stored "tag list" on the web, ability to send a clip of the song to a friend or the chance to purchase the single or album directly from their phone. Shazam has developed a breakthrough technology in audio pattern recognition to enable this service, for which six patents have been filed. Mobileway provides connectivity across all four of the UK Mobile Networks to ensure this service reaches the entire UK Mobile Population.

Why: Offers music lovers the chance to identify any tune or piece of music playing in the background in a bar/cafe, on the radio etc. Provides Music producers, record labels and artists with an even greater chance to sell their records and offers them a new channel for distribution. Allows the UK mobile operators to offer a music recognition service to all their customers without requiring upgrade in handsets or networks.

Outcome: The recently launched service has already been awarded Best Mobile Service by The Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2002, Britain’s n° 1 mobile phone magazine and has attracted a great deal of interest in the UK media.
